Daily Affirmations

My Journey from Fraud to Believer

By LINDSAY FRICKS

I shared a brief overview this week in my Instagram story about my experience using positive affirmations to help retrain the way my brain thinks. I got lots of comments on this so I wanted to dive a little deeper into my experience in case it could help someone else take control over their thoughts to create a more positive mindset.

I have to start by confessing that I’ve spent the majority of my life telling myself very negative things. Often times these thoughts revolved around being too much… too loud, too intense, too dramatic, too emotional, too fat… Sometimes my internal talk track was around being too little… not smart enough, not talented enough, not pretty enough etc… Sound familiar?  I know I’m not alone here because I meet with people every week that are wrestling with these same thoughts and emotions.

In addition to telling myself abusive thoughts on a daily basis I also operated from a place of fear. Often my fear drove me to stick with things well beyond their expiration simply because I didn’t want to face the failure. For example, I spent about twice as long in corporate America because I didn’t want to admit to the world that I just wasn’t cut out for it and didn’t love the repetitive grind selling products I really didn’t care for myself. It was soul crushing but I continued to do it for about eight years longer than I should have out of fear and lack in confidence that I have the qualifications to do something else.

As part of my journey to breakout of these negative cycles I began researching and reading all kinds of self help and business books. I kept coming across the idea of positive affirmations. Honestly, I could never see myself doing this because it just seemed so cheesy and fluffy. The idea that you could just write things down and then one day it would magically all turn out to be true just seemed like the biggest pile of BS.

The science behind it is called neuropsychology…the study of the structure and function of the brain as they relate to specific psychological processes and behaviors. Basically, the study of how your thoughts create your beliefs, which in turn fuel your actions, and the idea that these can be reprogrammed throughout your life. Your brain doesn’t have the ability to tell fact or fiction so if you tell it something enough it eventually develops into a belief. All our actions are derived from our beliefs so we will start acting in accordance with our new beliefs. Pretty cool, huh? I’m analytical by nature so knowing that there’s a specific field of study dedicated to this gave me enough validation to go ahead and try it myself.

I set out with a goal to write each affirmation 25 times each for 25 days at the suggestion of one of the books I read called “Ninja Selling” by Larry Kendall. In order to do this I had to learn how to write a positive affirmation. Affirmations should be written in first person and with the intended goal or outcome as it’s already been achieved. For example, “I sell 20+ homes per year.” Of course, I don’t today, but maybe if I believe I do and act as if I do, then I will. I set five specific affirmations of both personal and professional nature.

At first, I admit I felt like a fraud. The affirmations seemed too lofty or unrealistic, yet I carried on with the experiment. By about day 10 of this I started feeling more comfortable with the affirmations like maybe, just maybe, I could actually sell 20 homes this year. Around day 20, I started to put some plans in place to get enough prospects and leads into my pipeline to actually sell 20 homes. Wait, was this working? I’ve started doing things differently and structuring my day and actions around the idea that I sell 20 homes per year…um, this shit works!! My thoughts changed my beliefs and I’m taking differential action to make the affirmations a reality. BOOM!

Since my initial 25 day challenge I’ve continued writing my affirmations every morning before I do anything else. I’ve added some to the list so I’m up to eight daily affirmations that I write one time each. This sets the tone for my day and fires me up to consistently perform at a higher level and with greater purpose and intent than I ever have before.

Want to see if this can work for you? I challenge you to pick one affirmation…write it the old fashioned way with pen and paper 25 times each day for 25 days! What do you have to lose? This takes less than five minutes and will give you the opportunity to see for yourself that the power of positive affirmations works!
