Sunshine

I’ve survived 100% of my bad days.

By LINDSAY FRICKS

“Keep your face toward the sunshine, and the shadows will fall behind you.”

This week I did something I’ve wanted to do for almost five years. I got a memorial tattoo for my nephew, Wyatt, who died at the age of three. We called him “Sunshine.” And, not because of his sunny disposition. In fact, it was an inside joke because he was sometimes quite a pill.

Sunshine

One of the mantras that helps get me through the tough times is that I’ve survived 100% of my bad days. Losing Wyatt was the worst thing that has ever happened to me and I survived. It’s given me the perspective that if I can survive that, then I can survive anything.

Lately, in the midst of so much opportunity and abundance, I still feel myself getting weighed down by trivial things and the chaos of so much change happening at once. Yesterday I had to step out, take some deep breaths, enjoy the glorious Arizona sunshine and do something a little spontaneous to pull me out of the funk…and it worked!

Getting this tattoo is a milestone for me…accepting the permanence of his absence and serving as an everlasting reminder of all the lessons and blessings that he left behind for me.

“Sunshine is the best medicine.”
