Where to Eat in The Valley?

By LINDSAY FRICKS

As a local Arizona expert I often get asked ”what are the best restaurants in Phoenix or Scottsdale”. This week I want to share some hidden gems that you probably won’t find at the top of the Yelp searches even though this sample size of one says they should be.

1. JTs- This is my favorite spot pretty much anywhere. Had a bad day? JTs. Had a great day? JTs. Hot date? JTs. This tiny little bar right off Indian School and 48th has some of the coldest beer and best wings I’ve ever had. This is our version of Cheers.

2. Karsen’s- This place is a close second to JT’s they have equally as delicious wings and a much larger food selection. The staff is always super personable, the portions are HUGE and delicious. Located right in Old Town Scottsdale this is a regular go-to lunch spot for me during the week.

3. Salt Cellar- This little underground steak and seafood restaurant is equal parts charming and scrumptious. Many people overlook this unique restaurant because the location and sign don’t necessarily convey what to expect inside. This is an awesome alternative to the more “scene” white table cloth steak places like Mastros and Steak 44. Do yourself a favor and order the Shrimp San Remo off the Specialty Appetizers Menu!

4. Uncle Sal’s- Located in an unassuming strip mall near Old Town this traditional Italian fine dining restaurant has been a staple in Scottsdale for over 25 years. There are lots of rumors about this being owned by old Mob boss from New York. They have amazing service and food. My favorite is the Penne Alla Vodka.

5. Durant’s- This white table cloth steak restaurant guarantees to transport you to another era. Here you enter through the kitchen into the dimly lit dining room with red velvet lined walls that ooze a richness rarely found in contemporary restaurant design. The food here meets or beats the quality of other high end restaurants, but offers a unique experience that makes it well worth the trip to Central Phoenix.

6. Sip Coffee House & Beer Garage- Coffee and beer is a no brainer combination if you ask me. Sip has two convenient locations in Arcadia and Old Town. I frequent the Arcadia location that’s built in an old Jiffy Lube station. They have yummy simple eats available all day. You can find the cool kids mingling and working here. If you’re looking for great coffee that’s not a mainstream chain this is your spot.

7. Undertow- This tiny experiential mixology bar is located directly below Sip’s location in Arcadia…literally in the mechanic bays of the old Jiffy Lube. They transformed this space into the belly of a ship complete with portholes. They even have the occasional ocean storm. Make sure to get your reservation up to seven days in advance…it’s well worth the extra effort to wow your date or out of town guests with this special experience.

What are your favorite off the beaten path restaurants? If you’re lucky I might just invite you to help me experience your “Best of Phoenix” restaurant together!
