I'll Cheers to That!

By LINDSAY FRICKS

It’s no secret that I love a great cocktail! With the scary economic and health news of late, you can bet I’ll be having one (or 10) today. This week, Lindsay’s List is all about where to find the best drinks in the Valley of the sun.

The ambiance, exclusivity and unique aesthetic are a big part of the recipe when creating a great cocktail experience. Whether I’m traveling abroad with my husband or celebrating with clients after a home purchase, I’m a sucker for a one-of-a-kind experience, location and beverage to compliment great company.

Here’s my top 10 locations in the Phoenix valley that take the phrase “let’s grab a cocktail” to the next level:

  1. Undertow– Arcadia Phoenix. I’ve written about this spot before because I love it so much. There’s something about walking into an old Jiffy Lube station that’s transformed into a hip coffee shop only to find a secret underworld of mixology downstairs. There’re only ~20 highly coveted seats in this tiki style, reservation only bar.
  2. Jade Bar– Paradise Valley. When we are feeling fancy there’s only one place we go. Jade Bar is located in the ultra luxe Sanctuary hotel on Camelback Mountain. It’s sexy, swanky and sensual. They often have amazing local musicians serenading as you enjoy your cocktails with a beautiful view of Paradise Valley. This bar does not accept reservations, but you can typically find a spot inside or on the patio.
  3. Little Rituals– Downtown Phoenix. This unexpected spot is located inside the Marriott Residence Inn which is just about as contrasting as you can get. It’s modern glam style reminds me a bit of the W hotels brand. The drinks are fantastic, but the food is also a standout at Little Rituals. On weekends they’re first come, first serve, but they do use the Yelp waitlist to save your place in line.
  4. Platform 18– Arcadia Phoenix. This bar transports you to a lavish train car traveling through a gorgeous landscape. Each experience starts with a complementary petite glass of champagne which should just be an industry standard in my opinion. The drinks are inventive and delicious, but the ambiance is what really steals the show here. Reservations are required in advance if you plan to board this train.
  5. MercBar– Biltmore Phoenix. This is one classy bar. It was designed after it’s namesake bar in New York City and is decidedly so not Arizona. It’s located within the busy Biltmore Financial district so the clientele seems slightly more sophisticated. This is a great place to take clients or anyone who’s a little more pinky’s up. MercBar does accept reservations.
  6. Melinda’s Alley– Downtown Phoenix. This speakeasy is marked by a single red light found in the alleyway behind the Renaissance Phoenix Hotel. A lot of history is behind this bar so make sure you ask for the story when you’re ordering one of their limited rotating menu of craft cocktails. It’s first come, first serve and occasionally a line on weekend nights.
  7. Honor Amongst Thieves– Central Phoenix. Located up an unmarked stairway from the restaurant Stock and Stable, this 1950’s style speakeasy has the recipe for a fun night. They have great drinks, attentive staff, classy decor, nice clientele and great music. They take reservations via phone so I would definitely book ahead.
  8. The Beverly– Scottsdale. The swanky but approachable cocktail lounge makes a great place to start or end an evening in Old Town. They have a large menu of crafty drinks but my favorite is Namaste Beaches. They take reservations but it’s typically not necessary.
  9. Second Story Liquor Bar– Scottsdale. This is the kind of bar you go for a drink and stay for a delicious meal. Located on the second story above a gelato shop, this quaint bar punches way above their weight class on all fronts. Great wine, a large collection of whiskeys and hand-crafted mixology drinks. Reservations are recommended for a guaranteed spot.
  10. Bitter & Twisted-Downtown Phoenix. Last but certainly not least, this well known, award winning cocktail lounge is ironically located in the former Prohibition Headquarters. The extensive list of very unique concoctions are often served in the most creative vessels like a large rubber ducky or honey bear. This bar uses the Yelp waitlist which is strongly encouraged because otherwise it’s first come, first serve and can be a significant wait time.
