Humility-The Path to Growth

Humility-The Path to Growth

Have you ever been humbled?  I am not talking about the subtle shame of asking a millennial to fix your laptop.  Nope!  I am talking about transitioning from a place in your career where you feel confident and comfortable, but unfulfilled, to a place of being scared to death of opening your mouth for fear of exposing yourself as someone who has very little idea what they are talking about.  Oh, and doing that as you stand on the life tracks with the 50-Train barreling down on you?  That was me 9months ago.

Well, if you haven’t, I absolutely hope you get the chance someday.  Not because I wish ill will on you.  Not at all!  I’m sure, if we aren’t already, we would be fast friends, and I would never hope for a friend to suffer.  However, when we make a huge change at a later stage in life, it’s extremely uncomfortable.  When we are uncomfortable, we have a chance to do something we may not have expected…. we grow…  a lot! Growth isn’t wasted on the young, but we just usually reserve it for them. No more!

I am here to tell you that humility and being uncomfortable can make you do some crazy things.  Silly things like…

  • Watch YouTube videos and listen to podcasts daily to be even 1% better than you were the day before
  • Network with driven, successful people for no other reason than to listen and learn
  • Ask more questions than you try to answer
  • Invest money and time in your future-self because you trust yourself now more than you did when you were 25
  • Use social media to educate and communicate rather than “liking” the 213 pics of your friends’ kids graduating 3rd grade (Seriously, folks.  That’s not graduating.  That’s not getting held back!)

I’ve heard people say that if they could go back in time knowing what they know now that they would be dangerous.  Sorry, my friend.  There is no flux capacitor in your Tesla that kicks in at 88 mph.  There are two things in this life that are undefeated: Father Time and Mother Nature.  They have never been beaten.  However, you can give them one hell of a run!

Stop being unfulfilled.

Get humbled!

Get uncomfortable!

Grow!
