Moving Sucks

A checklist to help ease the stress

By LINDSAY FRICKS

Did you know that moving is the in the top five of lifetime stressors? Death, divorce, moving, illness and job loss are the life events that cause a person more stress than anything else. Those of you who have recently moved or are in the process feel this pain. In today’s blog I’m going to share some ways to plan and execute a (somewhat) stress free move.

  1. First things first, manage your expectations that even the most well thought out move will be somewhat unpredictable and stressful. Once you accept this as fact, you’ll be more resilient and roll with the punches from a more fluid mindset.
  2. Overestimate how long each step of the process will take. I constantly see people who know they’re going to move, wait until the last minute to prepare. People…stop doing this or you’re going to be homeless! Ok…that might be a tad dramatic, but you will end up in an Airbnb and maybe have to settle for a less than perfect home. Procrastinating moving prep always costs you time, money and stress.
  3. Purge your little heart out…well ahead of time go through EVERY single storage area, closet, under beds and junk drawer(s). If you haven’t used it or worn it in 12 months it’s gotta go. I see people move a ton of stuff they don’t need (looking at you, Mom) and ain’t nobody, including your hired help, have time for that.
  4. On that note, leave it to the pros…. No really, your friends do not want to help you move. They will because they’re awesome, but your cortisol levels, your belongings and your relationships will thank you for hiring professional movers.
  5. Last but not least, do yourself a solid and hire an empathetic Realtor. You need a pro…and preferably one who has experience in a similar type of move so they understand all the emotions and obstacles that come along with it. I’ve moved a lot…across the country, across the state and many times across the city. I know what you’re going through and because of that you can count on me to clear the path to your new home.
