What Are You Worth?

By LINDSAY FRICKS

How well do you perform when your efforts aren’t appreciated or recognized? Do you do your best? Do you take pride in your quality of work? Do you go above and beyond to get the best result?

It’s time for me to address the controversial topic of real estate commissions. This is highly debated and discussed among both agents and consumers alike. What is the value of a real estate agent and how much commission should they earn?

Lindsay Fricks

For most people, the largest purchase they’ll ever make is their home. It’s a really big deal and you definitely want the person representing you to feel energized, valued and ready to go to bat for you. Expecting the best performance but being unwilling to pay for it will surely end up in disappointment.

PSA: You get what you pay for.

Do you want to do the same work for less pay? No…and you shouldn’t expect others to either.  If you want someone to work for less than their going rate then you should expect they won’t be doing their best work. That means the amount of time, effort and passion they’ll put forth will be minimal. This applies to every service based industry and not just real estate.

A great agent who is being fairly compensated will earn their commission in spades. They will negotiate a killer price and terms. They will go above and beyond to make a smooth transaction. They will proactively communicate issues, manage risks and limit liabilities. What is this worth to you?

Everyone wants a deal…I totally get that and I do too. However, a deal must be mutually beneficial and equitable for both parties. There are certainly situations which will benefit a service provider to reduce their compensation such as referral partners, bulk transactions, exclusivity, etc…. Before you ask for a commission reduction, first ask yourself what you have to offer or are willing to do in exchange? If the answer is nothing, then it may be time to re-think that question.
